About the Moorestown Quakers Ice Hockey Club The Moorestown Quakes Ice Hockey Club was formed in the Fall of 2000 by a group of passionate Moorestown hockey enthusiasts that wanted to provide Moorestown youth the opportunity to play ice hockey to represent their community and schools in local competitive leagues. Over the years, the club has grown and commanded a respect in the region for outstanding talent and sportsmanship. The Quaker teams have enjoyed great success through a variety of league and tournament championship wins. Our teams proudly represent Moorestown as a "club" team. Although we are not directly affiliated with the Moorestown Township Public School District, we enjoy a cooperative relationship. A number of players on our teams bring travel team experience. Limited opportunities for "out of district" player participation exists from time to time. Many of the Club's players go on to play college and semi-professional hockey at a variety of levels in the United States and Canada. Our non profit club fields tiered teams (i.e. A, B, C divisions) at the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Middle School levels based on talent and turnout levels in the Fall and Spring seasons each year. Currently, the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams compete in the South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League, an independent scholastic hockey league organization. The Middle School teams compete in the South Jersey Middle School Ice Hockey League organized by Flyers Skatezone. The Middle School program is used for player development to feed into the high school program. In New Jersey High Schools, Ice Hockey is a sanctioned sport by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. Many public, private and parochial high schools across New jersey compete in ice hockey as accredited schools under competition governed by NJSIAA similar to many other high school sports. Eventually our club would like to see ice hockey become a Moorestown High School sponsored sport and sanctioned by NJSIAA. The club was originally called the Moorestown "Quakes" Ice Hockey Club (short for "Quakers" but rumored by many to refer to the hard hits of earthquakes) in reference to Moorestown's Quaker founding and history. The Moorestown Township Public School District mascot is "The Quaker". . Although the majority of our players go to school in the Moorestown Township Public School District, we also have players from other area public, private and parochial schools as well. The Club proudly represents all in Moorestown who love the game of ice hockey including players, families, friends, fans and sponsors.

| New to Ice Hockey, Getting Involved and Membership Information Our club is always looking for new players to join our teams! Although the Fall-Winter season typically starts in September and the Spring season typically starts in April, it is always a good time to inquire about how you can play ice hockey and how to get involved with our Club. Like most sports, ice hockey is about FUN but there is important safety knowledge and basic skills you will need to acquire to begin to enjoy the great game of ice hockey and grow your skills and knowledge of the game. Although our club is focused on participation in scholastic hockey leagues, we are fortunate to enjoy a high-level of play and strong inter-club competition in the South Jersey area scholastic leagues. Ice hockey is a contact sport and ice skating skills are a large part of the game. While our Club does accept "new" and "inexperienced" ice hockey players, this most commonly occurs at the Middle School level. Because we play in competitive, checking leagues, entering into the high school level teams as a "new" ice hockey player is not common and is "discouraged" for safety reasons and because of a skills gap that may be difficult to overcome. The following information and recommendations have proven to be beneficial to "new" players to ice hockey and will provide an important foundation of safety, basic skills so that participation on our teams can quickly become a fun and fulfilling experience. First and foremost our players love the game of hockey - all forms of it. Learning about the game, watching it on TV and playing street hockey with your neighborhood friends or in recreation leagues are great activities to build interest, knowledge and skills in the game of hockey. Many, if not all of our players, have some background in playing "roller" or "in-line" hockey either indoor or outdoor in the neighborhood, in recreation leagues or in organized competitive leagues. Although there are some key differences between inline and ice skating techniques, there are many useful and transferable skills when moving from inline to ice skating. We have found that the transition to ice skating is easier when you have inline skating experience compared to playing street hockey (in sneakers) as an example. We recommend that "new" ice hockey players complete "learn to (hockey) skate" and "learn to play ice hockey" programs offered at local area ice rinks prior to joining on of our teams. These classes teach important safety knowledge, basic game skills and important basic ice skating fundamentals in a hockey setting. "Open Skate," "Stick Time" and "Open Hockey" sessions at the local ice rinks are an excellent, low-cost opportunity for players of ALL skill levels to continue to work on strengthening their skating and hockey skills. Some of our players have benefited from the experience of "in-house" ice hockey leagues (run out of most local ice rinks) before or during participation on our teams. This level of experience builds on top of the basic/introduction level of instruction in the "learn to..." programs discussed above and introduces team and competitive play. Once you are playing on one or more of our teams, the learning and development does not stop! Our teams attend on-ice practice during the Fall-Winter and Spring seasons. During the off-season, many of our players keep in shape by enjoying other sports or athletic activities including working out and running. Many players supplement our practice and their own personal work out activities by attending off-ice hockey conditioning programs or specifically focused classes, clinics and camps both locally and regionally. Examples of skills clinics our players attend include power skating, checking, goal tending, shooting, passing, stick handling and others. As mentioned earlier, "open skate," "stick time" and "open hockey" sessions are on-going opportunities for ALL players to get ice time and work on skating and hockey skills. Still want even more hockey development? Our club is fortunate to have some intermediate and advanced players that seek to further their ice hockey experience and skills by playing in competitive, travel ice hockey clubs and leagues. This travel hockey experience benefits players by providing additional ice time, skills development and increased competitive challenge. Please ask any staff member, parent or player in our Club about getting involved in Moorestown Ice Hockey today!
